A deal was signed earlier today to develop Ecoship, the world’s greenest cruise ship that will use wind and solar to help power the vessel.
DNV GL and the non-profit NGO signed a memorandum of understanding to develop the Ecoship. The ship will have the latest environmental friendly technologies and the project has been in the works since 2014. Cruise Fever first reported about the ship 10 months ago when the project was unveiled at COP21 in Paris.
The 55,000 gross ton cruise ship from Peace Boat will use hyrid propulsion to cut CO2 emissions by 40% when the ship is scheduled to set sail on its maiden voyage in 2020. Ecoship will have an aerodynamic upper hull inspired by the whale with a coating that mimics fish skin.
The cabins and public spaces will be designed for comfort, based on biophilic principles appealing to our connection with nature. The ship will have the following features:
◦Onboard garden – plants from all around the world will be fed by rainwater and organic waste.
◦Energy recycling – An advanced low consumption HVAC system using energy waste from the main engines.
◦Closed-loop water system – Waste water will be reused, purified, and re-purposed, along with raing and seawater, for irrigating the on-board garden.
◦Zero water discharge, reduced air emissions – No sea dumping, zero water discharge and a 40% reduction in CO2 emissions.
The ship will be the world’s first 10 mast cruise liner that will harness the wind, reducing propulsion fuel needs, in optimal conditions.
